Guthrie Corning Hospital and Cancer Center
In 2019, Barge Design Solutions acquired Nashville-based Gould Turner Group (GTG). Read full article.
In order to create a new acute care hospital and cancer center, 110-year-old Corning Hospital needed a replacement facility. GTG was tasked with designing and programming this new space, which includes 65 inpatient beds, significant outpatient services, and a cancer center housing radiation therapy and oncology services.
The new acute care facility needed to be readily identifiable and highly visible from the highway adjacent to the property. The cancer center needed its own identity on the site, incorporating lean, sustainable, and evidence-based concepts. The client also requested a masterplan that would accommodate a future medical office building and any additional future hospital growth.
GTG incorporated design concepts to improve hospital functions, employ lean premises, and support operational efficiencies. The proposed updates reduced square footage, effectively decreasing patient transfer distances and, ultimately, reducing the staffing volume required to maintain the facility. Standardized nursing units, replicated modules, smart equipment storage, and other efficiency features provided for ease of access and navigation throughout the hospital.
The master plan, created during the planning and design phase, set the stage for further expansion and site development.
The newly designed and constructed Guthrie Corning Hospital and Cancer Center is situated on the site with future growth concepts in mind, while simultaneously accommodating parking and circulation, visibility from the highway, and solar impact on the building.
This LEED Certified facility provides amenities for patients, families, and staff, such as staff charting stations between patient rooms, family sleep sofas in patient rooms, and bedside room controls for patients. Wayfinding through the facility is direct and intuitive. The site is accessible to public transportation, and added touches such as the covered drop off canopies at the main entrance, cancer center, ambulance, emergency, and patient discharge demonstrate thoughtful attention to the patient and family experience.
By the Numbers
The Barge Factor
In the hospital’s words:
“The needs of our patients, their families and loved ones are at the center of all that we do. This philosophy is evident in the layout of Guthrie Corning Hospital which features large, naturally lit public spaces, free Wi-Fi access; a café-like dining area; ample parking and multiple patient drop-off entrances. Each and every one of our 65 patient rooms are private with en suite private bathroom and all of our clinical care spaces are configured to encourage constant care for and interaction with our patients and their loved ones to enhance safety, satisfaction, timeliness and efficiency.”
