The Challenge
Canyon Vista Medical Center is a new four-story, 176,000 SF 106-bed acute care hospital with an adjacent medical office building, situated on a 77-acre campus in the high desert of Sierra Vista, Arizona. Our design team faced the unique task of connecting this new facility to an existing outpatient surgical center while keeping the existing center operational during construction.
The Solution
The program for Canyon Vista Medical Center required spacing for 75 medical/surgical beds, 12 critical care beds, 19 behavioral health beds, and seven labor and delivery rooms. The following additions were incorporated into the design to be connected to the existing surgical facility’s ambulatory suite:
- Cesarean section suite
- Level I nursery
- Level II trauma center
- Observation beds
- Imaging suite including radiographic and nuclear medicine capabilities, a CT machine, shelled MRI machine, and ultrasound, and mammography rooms
- Additional operating rooms
- A full complement of clinical, administrative, and support services spaces
The contractor and GTG proactively leveraged the use of mock-ups during construction tosave time by testing the performance of specified materials and connections for the building’s exterior. This process allowed for potential design or constructability issues to be addressed in a cost-effective and timely manner, before they were realized as construction concerns.
Results
The new Canyon Vista Medical Center is designed to respect patient privacy and dignity, support efficiency of use for caregivers, and provide a welcoming environment for patients and families. Corridors are arranged to separate patient and public foot traffic, and hospital departments are configured to maximize the functional relationships between them. All major ancillary services are along exterior walls to more easily accommodate future expansion.
The massing and color scheme of the hospital are inspired by the natural color palette of the surrounding landscape, bringing a measure of warmth and familiarity to its visitors.
This project was not only delivered on time, but it was also consistently ahead of the 15-month fast track schedule and was completed on budget. Canyon Vista Medical Center is now a Center of Excellence for Total Joint Replacement.

The client included the contractor in the Early Design phase to work closely with project stakeholders and provide conceptual and schematic budgets. This, along with employing local subcontractors, allowed the contractor to conduct studies and provide cost saving ideas that resulted in a 5% reduction from the initial budget.
