Knoxville Downtown Infrastructure Replacement
The Challenge
Knoxville’s central business district is home to many businesses and hosts several events throughout the year–minimizing the disruption of this area was a top priority. Additionally, underground space was congested with utilities and trolley tracks, some of which dated back to the 1890s. The Knoxville Utilities Board (KUB) needed to replace all cast iron water lines in the city’s central business district with a more modern system. Barge Design Solutions developed a comprehensive wastewater system replacement plan, as well as improvements to natural gas and electric duct bank infrastructure.
The Solution
Barge Design Solutions pulled mapping records, including original hand-drawn utility notes, to research the previous infrastructure. Designers and surveyors worked together to lay out and review data for an accurate survey that could be used to design the project. The survey, along with existing research, allowed for productive installation that minimized utility outages.
By the Numbers
The Barge Factor
Barge Design Solutions was able to move quickly and meet scheduled deadlines. Mapping all underground utilities provided a detailed design that reduced the possibility of construction surprises.
