The Challenge
Constructed in 1982, the Atlanta University Center (AUC) Robert W. Woodruff Library is the only library that serves the world’s largest consortium of Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs): Clark Atlanta University, the Interdenominational Theological Center, Morehouse College, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Spelman College. As the “center of the Center,” the Woodruff Library acts as the intellectual and informational hub of the educational institutions. The AUC wanted to create a new green space that would serve as an outdoor extension of the library, a collaborative place for students and professors, and a space for special events. The street and existing pedestrian promenade would also be closed and extended to better connect the academic institutions.
The Solution
Barge Design Solutions' strong portfolio of higher education and campus planning, along with the team's placemaking experience and ability, provided the client with a level of comfort and stability. Using input from library management and students, Barge developed a plan for the space which extended the library’s mission beyond the walls and into a new Campus Green.
The new plaza features multiple study rooms for small gatherings, an amphitheater for performances, and an enclosed dining patio. The design also strengthened the existing promenade, connecting the library to other sites within the AUC, and incorporated original paving concepts based on African basketweave designs. Landscaping elements included a rain garden and a shade structure over larger gathering spaces.
The Result
The Barge team's successful creation of the Campus Green has significantly enhanced the overall experience for students and faculty of the HBCUs within the AUC.
