Higgins to join Vanderbilt University School of Engineering Board of Visitors

27 / March / 2019

Nashville, Tenn. - Bob Higgins has been appointed to the Board of Visitors for the Vanderbilt University School of Engineering. Higgins is President and Chief Executive Officer for Barge Design Solutions, Inc., and has been with the firm since 1996 when he started as an intern while attending the School of Engineering at Vanderbilt University for a degree in Civil Engineering.

The Vanderbilt University School of Engineering's Board of Visitors is made up of some of the school's most distinguished alumni and friends. Board members serve as advisors to the Dean and senior staff and their role is to provide advice and foster the achievement of excellence in all aspects of the school, review and support strategic plans, and assist in developing beneficial relationships with industry, government, and other academic institutions.

Vanderbilt and Barge share a long history together and with the Nashville community. Barge has been active in Nashville for more than 60 years, and it all started at Vanderbilt where the founders of the firm met and developed the idea to start a company together. Barge’s employees continue to be active on Vanderbilt’s campus by mentoring students, visiting classes, providing internship opportunities, and overseeing design projects.

When asked why Vanderbilt is important to him, Higgins says, “It changed my life going to Vanderbilt University. It set me on a different course and connected me to Barge. I want that connection to continue because I know it was so important to me. If we can pay it forward, that’s what it’s all about.”

Higgins remembers how impactful a scholarship he received during his time at Vanderbilt was to him and recalls, “I received the Aletha & Thad Dorsey Scholarship while at school; I can even remember writing the family a thank you note. When the opportunity came to give back to a school that had given me so much, I really wanted to make it happen and the alumni here at Barge got behind it full-force. We wanted to help and be a part of this in any way we could.”

Higgins previously served on Vanderbilt’s School of Engineering Board of Visitors (2013 – 2016). During that term, he helped establish a scholarship in the name of Barge Design Solutions for the School of Engineering. The fund is supported by employees who are alumni of the Engineering School plus a match from the company.
