Ethan Johnson and Michael Tapp received Barge Design Solutions' Dan Barge, Jr. Award of Merit on April 14, 2018, at the Annual Stockholders’ Meeting and Employee Banquet.
Ethan's recognition is due to his distinguished service relative to his role as main structural liaison on the high-profile Mercedes-Benz Vans project in Alabama and his day-to-day interface with other disciplines and subcontractors. All this occurred while Ethan prepared to test for his professional engineering license.
Ethan’s responsiveness to field issues helped Barge’s client Yates Construction meet their schedule and budgets. His diligence is a significant factor in the client recognizing the firm as a designer of choice for design build projects.
He graduated from the Raymond B. Jones College of Engineering at Lipscomb University in 2013 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He then attended Vanderbilt University to obtain a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering with a Structures concentration. In 2017, Ethan successfully became a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Tennessee.
Michael received the Dan Barge, Jr. Award of Merit for his pivotal role in the design and delivery of the I-24/Hickory Hollow Parkway Diverging Diamond Interchange, a soon-to-be hallmark project for the Transportation Business Unit.
Michael’s role in the project not only influenced the technical design but also the firm’s reputation with numerous clients, including the Tennessee Department of Transportation, Metro Nashville, and the developer. His tireless dedication and commitment in submitting the Federal Highway Administration-requested Interchange Access Request made the firm a viable candidate to perform the project’s design.
Michael, the longest-tenured roadway engineer at Barge, has also influenced Transportation’s growing professional roster, mentoring mid-level designers and entry-level engineer interns. He takes time to teach helpful skills and firmwide standards. Michael is never heard saying, “no, too busy” or “I just don’t have time.”
Michael joined the firm in 1998. He is a University of Memphis graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and a licensed Professional Engineer in five states – Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Ohio, and Georgia.
The Dan Barge, Jr. Award of Merit recognizes an employee for distinctive performance in a specific situation during the prior year, in which he or she has demonstrated extraordinary initiative or capability beyond the requirements of the position in furthering the interests of the firm.
