Copperhill Watershed Restoration project receives highest honor at ACEC Tennessee’s 2019 Engineering Excellence Awards competition

Nashville, TN - Barge Design Solutions and Glenn Springs Holdings, Inc., were honored at ACEC Tennessee’s 2019 Engineering Excellence Awards in Nashville, TN with the Grand Iris Award, the competition’s top prize, for restoration of Copperhill Watershed in Ducktown, TN. According to ACEC, the annual competition “recognizes engineering firms for projects that demonstrate an exceptional degree of innovation, complexity, achievement, and value”.
The dramatic transformation of the Copper Basin in Southeast Tennessee has been the successful result of many restoration tasks to repair the damage caused by decades of mining and acid production. The novel approach of adaptive management allowed the project to move efficiently through assessment and remediation in less than 20 years. This innovative approach brought environmental, social, and economic benefits to the community through the transformation of damaged watersheds into healthy streams and rivers that serve residents and visitors with many recreational opportunities, as well as educational opportunities through events and displays showcasing the history of the site and its evolution.
According to the Chattanooga Times Free Press, the council pointed to the less than 20-year transformation of damaged watersheds into healthy streams and rivers, and the recreational and educational opportunities that resulted, in announcing the Grand Iris Award. Read full article here.
