23 / September / 2020

Tennessee's Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce has selected Barge as the top Business Education Investor for 2020. This award recognizes, “a member organization who has excelled in partnering with our school system to help Chattanooga & Hamilton County create a strong talent pipeline.”

Barge believes in investing in education, training, and mentorship through various company-wide efforts, as well as personal community involvement. Many Barge employees volunteer their time with education-focused organizations. Ben Nemec and Tyler Gross, Civil Engineers in the Chattanooga office, assist teams of local students in developing and presenting their designs for a local construction project through the ACE Mentor Program. Harry Hawkins, Client Service Leader, sits on multiple Hamilton County Department of Education Future Ready Institute Boards, and is involved with the Association of General Contractors of East Tennessee Construction Career Program.

Additionally, the Chattanooga office has hired interns from Chattanooga State Community College, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and other universities around the Southeast. Several of these interns went on to begin their careers at Barge upon graduation.

Hawkins shares, “Formal education such as professional training and development, degrees, and book knowledge are all vital within themselves, however, it’s when you tie mentorship and the opportunity to experience real-world scenarios into a student’s training… that’s what lights the fires of passion. As someone who has been shaped by many mentors, I believe it’s our duty as professionals to apprentice the next generation and pass our torch to a diverse group of individuals who will take our great industry to the next level and beyond.”
