Chattanooga, TN – (January 6, 2020) Barge Design Solutions, Inc., Community Fund recently awarded over $32,000 to various organizations local to the firm’s regional offices. One of these grants was awarded to the Chattanooga Area Food Bank for $5,040.

Serving 20 counties in Southeast Tennessee and Northwest Georgia, the Chattanooga Area Food Bank seeks to lead a network of partners in eliminating hunger and promoting better nutrition throughout their region. This grant will specifically support their Sack Pack Program, an initiative to provide children with nutritious food over each of the 32 weekends in the school year.

The Food Bank’s Sack Packs are provided to students who lack consistent access to nutritious food and are therefore identified as “food insecure” by guidance counselors, principals, teachers, and other professionals at their schools. Each Sack Pack includes roughly two-and-a-half pounds of balanced, nutritionally-sound food that follows the “USDA My Plate” recommendations. The Community Fund grant will provide Sack Packs for 75 students throughout the course of one school year.

Pat Moore, Project Manager at Barge, nominated the Chattanooga Area Food Bank for this grant. Pat shares, “In southeast Tennessee and northwest Georgia, one in five children struggles with hunger and may go to bed hungry tonight. Many children who are enrolled in free and reduced school meal programs don't know where their next meal will come from once school lets out for the weekend. The Sack Pack program helps to address their needs and provides nutritious food to help bridge the gap from Friday to Monday when school is out. This grant will help to provide 2,400 Sack Packs to children at risk for hunger during the 2019-2020 school year.”
